About the course
This course develops your ability to manage livestock production through sound husbandry, welfare and production records. Learning combines technical study with practical tasks relevant to Southern African organisations and communities.
What you'll learn
- Plan feeding, housing and routine husbandry for a defined livestock enterprise.
- Recognise the limits of routine care and refer animal-health concerns appropriately.
- Use production and cost records to evaluate enterprise performance.
Requirements
- Prepare to follow practical instructions, use basic measurements and keep a simple record of your work. The facilitator will introduce the tools and safe working procedures used in each activity. Check the provider's published admission requirements before enrolment.

Stage 1: Foundation knowledge and safe practice
- Animal Production Systems and Welfare. Build foundation skills in animal production systems and welfare. Guided examples introduce production systems and animal needs, followed by practice with welfare indicators and resources. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use production goals and farm records to review the result.
- Safe Farm Work and Animal Handling. Build foundation skills in safe farm work and animal handling. Guided examples introduce handling principles and animal behaviour, followed by practice with worker safety and protective equipment. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use hygiene and supervisor reporting to review the result.
Stage 2: Technical subjects and guided application
- Housing, Feed and Water. Build foundation skills in housing, feed and water. Guided examples introduce housing needs and ventilation, followed by practice with feed categories and water supply. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use cleanliness and resource records to review the result.
- Routine Husbandry and Health Observation. Build foundation skills in routine husbandry and health observation. Guided examples introduce routine observation and body condition, followed by practice with health indicators and hygiene. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use veterinary referral and care records to review the result.
- Breeding, Growth and Production Records. Build foundation skills in breeding, growth and production records. Guided examples introduce breeding concepts and growth stages, followed by practice with production measures and identification. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use record accuracy and performance review to review the result.
- Animal Enterprise Costs and Marketing. Build foundation skills in animal enterprise costs and marketing. Guided examples introduce enterprise costs and production income, followed by practice with market requirements and product quality. You will complete a supervised task, explain your choices and use cash flow and sales records to review the result.
Stage 3: Enterprise and integrated proficiency
- Small Enterprise Records and Customer Communication. Study the development of a viable small enterprise from a defined customer need. Guided practice centres on a small-enterprise plan and test record, drawing on customer problems and enterprise opportunities and products, services and value propositions. You will record findings, justify decisions and check whether the financial assumptions and customer evidence support the proposal.
- Animal Production Skills Proficiency. Demonstrate the practical skills developed across the programme. Tasks integrate animal production systems and welfare, safe farm work and animal handling within an agreed work brief. You will prepare resources, carry out the authorised task and check the result. Your evidence should show consistent performance, accurate records and an explanation of decisions within your learner role.
Assessment and practical learning
- Suggested learning checks: explain a procedure, complete a short task and respond to practical questions.
- Suggested practical assessment: demonstrate the skill under supervision and keep a record of completed work.
