About the course
Learn how basic measurements support the observation of industrial processes. The proposed foundation course introduces instruments, units, simple signals and careful records before guided practical tasks. Southern African examples should include water, temperature and other familiar process quantities, with emphasis on recognising limitations and reporting concerns accurately.
What you'll learn

- Record and compare measurements from a supervised teaching exercise.
- Recognise a questionable reading and report the supporting observations.
Requirements
- Recommended preparation is functional literacy, numeracy and readiness for supervised practical work. BMIT must confirm the authorised foundation-certificate entry route, any bridging support and recognition of prior learning. No comparator duration, credits, qualification-framework level or examination entitlement is assigned to this proposed outline.

Subjects in this programme
The subjects are grouped by learning stage, from foundations to specialist study and supervised application. Complete earlier foundations before the related advanced work. Clinical, laboratory, field and workplace subjects use approved facilities and supervision appropriate to the programme.

Stage 1: Foundations
- Occupational Safety and Risk. Examine hazard identification, exposure and their relationship within occupational safety and risk. The subject develops risk assessment and hierarchy of controls, then examines incident learning and worker participation. Review an authorised workplace case and propose proportionate controls.
- Technical Numeracy. Develop your understanding of technical numeracy through units and ratios. The subject develops measurement and geometry, then examines graphs and checking calculations. Solve measurements and costing problems from a practical teaching task.
- Electrical and Electronic Fundamentals. Study electrical quantities and components as foundations for electrical and electronic fundamentals. The subject develops simple circuits and signals, then examines measurement and safe limits. Use current-limited low-voltage teaching equipment with supervision.
Stage 2: Technical and applied subjects
- Instrumentation Fundamentals. Examine units, sensors and their relationship within instrumentation fundamentals. The subject develops indicators and scales, then examines calibration awareness and reporting. Compare simple instruments on a safe supervised teaching rig.
- Measurement and Instrumentation. Develop your understanding of measurement and instrumentation through sensors and signal conditioning. The subject develops calibration and data acquisition, then examines traceability and measurement uncertainty. Compare instruments using approved references and retain a calibration record.
- Control Systems. Study system models and feedback as foundations for control systems. The subject develops stability and transient response, then examines controller comparison and robustness. Compare control responses in a safe simulation or supervised teaching rig.
Stage 3: Supervised practice and integration
- Foundation Practical Project. Examine brief interpretation, preparation and their relationship within foundation practical project. The subject develops supervised execution and quality checking, then examines corrections and reflection. Complete an approved foundation task within the programme practical scope.
- Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise. Develop your understanding of entrepreneurship and small enterprise through customer needs and value proposition. The subject develops business models and costs, then examines operations and enterprise risk. Develop a small-enterprise proposal grounded in a defined local need.
Assessment and practical learning
- Proposed assessment: short knowledge checks, calculations and interpretation of technical information.
- Direct observation of authorised practical tasks, supported by an individual record of preparation, results and quality checks.
- An applied project and oral explanation. Weighting, external examinations and award requirements remain subject to the approved BMIT and awarding-body arrangements.
Practical application
Use supervised low-risk teaching rigs and suitable instruments. Activities should practise observation and recording before adjustment. Live industrial control systems and safety-critical instruments must remain outside unauthorised learner work. Completing a basic course does not establish the competence of an instrument mechanician or calibration specialist.
